It was Martin Luther King, Jr. who first said “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” and the Doctor Reverend’s immortal words are as true today as ever. Thus I feel it my moral duty to protest your recent discrimination and imprisonment of a gay couple and demand their freedom.
Allow me to recount the events as they occurred. In the penguin sanctuary, a prosperous gay couple, living in harmony with the rest of the community, felt the pangs of child rearing and decided that they would like to raise a chick of their own. Being incapable of reproducing (though not for a lack of effort), the couple resorted to adoption, rescuing eggs from other couples (who undoubtedly would have made unfit parents) and replacing them with rounded stones.
However, instead of embracing and encouraging these two male penguins who wanted nothing but to raise a happy bird from egg-birth, the fowl community ostracized them. Now the zookeepers have encouraged this move, and segregated the gay penguins from the rest of the population in a small enclosure “to avoid disrupting the rest of the community during the hatching season.”
Though the rejection by the community was itself morally repugnant, your actions of detainment are simply abhorrent, and gives rise to a slippery slope. Now you claim to segregate the gay penguins for the good of the community. If this is where gay penguin discrimination starts, where then does it end? I fear that soon these gay penguins will be labeled explicitly as such, perhaps with purple triangles on their bellies so that they may be more easily identified. Further down the road they may be sent away to penguin internment pens “for their own good,” and the next thing we know gypsy, catholic, and learning-disordered penguins will all be shipped away, never to be heard from again.
We as responsible citizens cannot let this continue. We must end gay penguin discrimination now and lobby to end their segregation, for if we say nothing now, who then will speak for us when it is our turn in the gay penguin pen?
